Drug Addiction Recovery: The Mindful Way

Healing from addiction can be an intensely painful process as decades of frozen grief are unpacked. Thankfully, mindfulness can be a wonderful ally on the path to recovery.

Mindfulness offers us the experience of full awareness and acceptance of the moment, and gives us ways of focusing our attention consciously on our wellbeing and inherent goodness. Today, mindfulness is recognized as a powerful tool in relapse prevention—and I know from first-hand experience that it can be an effective method for healing from addiction.

My latest book, Drug Addiction Recovery: The Mindful Way, was written to help recovering addicts work through old wounds—including bereavement, abandonment, betrayal, and abuse. It uses effective mindfulness practices to complement long-term recovery and to help process sometimes-overwhelming feelings.

At the heart of addiction, we often experience painful emotional states that we’ve learned to fear. Instead of fully feeling or expressing them, we turn away from them. When we compulsively seek mind-altering substances to avoid our emotional pain, we simply fall deeper and deeper into the spiral of dependency…moving progressively further away from our emotions, which hold the key to our wellbeing. Mindfulness can aid us in moving through trauma and difficult emotions with love and compassion rather than avoidance.

This is a practical book for reclaiming your life on your road to recovery. Interspersed with personal reflections from my own recovery journey, Drug Addiction Recovery offers readers pragmatic, supportive ways to come to terms with the past, understand and forgive themselves, and live peacefully in the present. Topics include:

The nature of addiction
Associated addictive or dysfunctional behaviors
Why we need to grieve
Mindfulness and the brain
Coping with depression, shame, and alienation

It also offers easy and effective guided meditations, written and verbal exercises, and inspiring recovery stories.

You are not alone. For those of you who are building emotional and spiritual wellbeing in recovery, this book will offer you a variety ways to enhance self-respect and walk the path of serenity.
