An Orphan Baby Micha

A 24-year-old single mother named Regine Salera gave birth, by Cesarean section, to her first child August 7, 2015, at the Gen. Santos District Hospital in the Philippines, a beautiful baby girl named Micha.

Three days later, August 10, 2015, while still in the hospital, at around 8:30 a.m., the attending physician noticed Regine’s hemoglobin count was low. The doctor told her family members to provide a two bags of blood, which they were to obtain from the nearest Red Cross Blood Bank in Gen. Santos City. The family provided the two bags of blood around 11:30 a.m. and told the on-duty nurse that Regine needed the blood transfusion as soon as possible. The nurse said, “OK. No worries.”

After few hours, still no transfusion had been performed. Family members kept going to the nurses’ station to ask for assistance, but it seems the nurses ignored their pleas. Every time they asked for the blood transfusion, the nurses had many reasons why it was taking so long to perform. They said they were doing ‘a cross match’; they were having a meeting; and the doctor was not in the hospital.

Around 3:30 p.m., Regine needed oxygen because she couldn’t breathe; she was still waiting for the blood transfusion. The bleeding was getting worse and the top number of her blood pressure had dropped to 40.

Around 5 p.m., the doctor turned up in the hospital and was shocked to see that the transfusion had still not been performed. When told that they were waiting for a cross match, the doctor told the nurses that should only have taken an hour at most. Then, Regine finally had the blood transfusion.

The doctor then decided to transfer her to an area private hospital for surgery. Regine was unconscious while in the ambulance, and she died soon after arrival at the hospital.
